Campaigner's wacky idea to highlight town's plight

STRIP FOR ST ANNES
A campaigner stripped off in St Annes this week in a bizarre stunt aimed at drawing attention to the town's plight.

John Ramsbottom claimed his "Full Monty" act was a protest against how the town was also being stripped of its assets.

And he also urged the town's other menfolk to strip off too - for a calendar of 'naked men' that would be used to raise money for the St Annes Arts Centre campaign.

John, a fundraiser for St Annes Community Ares Centre Trust braved icy temperatures outside the former Blackpool and the Fylde College building on Clifton Drive South to draw attention to the cause.

His blushes spared by a strategically-places hard hat, he said "St Annes is being stripped naked of its assets and the failure of the community centre scheme would be another loss in arts provision."

"Proceeds from the sale of the calendar could raise more money for the trust" said the former drama student at the college. "Are there any men out there brave enough to pose for it?"

The college site is earmarked for a flats development by Newfield Jones Homes, but the trust has until Christmas to come up with a viable business plan to convert the listed part of the old building into an arts centre.

John's idea is similar in vein to a recent Women's Institute calendar in another part of the country.

He added "The major fundraising campaign for the centre is underway and more sponsors and helpers are needed to reflect the public interest and support of this worthwhile project."
